Mescaline, (3,4,5-trimethoxyphenethylamine) is the primary active alkaloid in the Peyote cactus (Lophophora williamsii) & San Pedro cactus (Echinopsis pachanoi) known as huachuma (pronounced Wa-chu-ma) by the Andean shamans who practice their Curandero arts using the cactus with their patients in their ceremonies.Huachuma is known amongst traditional healers as a ‘medicine of the heart’ and has possible medical usage, including treatment of alcoholism and depression.Peyote is a religious sacrament of the Native American Church used by over forty North American Indian tribes. The mescaline molecule shares a structural similarity to those of Serotonin and Dopamine
